May 2026 Climate Update

Climate in the news curated by Alan Anderson, Northfield Rotary Member and RCAT committee leader

 

  1. The world's food supply is in ever increasing danger from climate change - will we take action before it's too late?
  2. As the oceans absorb rising excess heat, they become less hospitable for marine life which millions of people depend on.
  3. Lasers in the sky can better record snowpack in the mountains, and it is near record lows - a bad sign for this summer and the future.

Climate education:

  1. More Renewable energy or carbon removal, which is better?  We need both but in the near term, we need all the additional renewable energy we can get.
  2. Used EVs are the cheapest cars you can get, and clearly best for the environment and the future.

Good climate news:

  1. The UN general assembly passed a strong climate statement calling for action.
  2. China, the world's largest emitter, is cutting emissions faster than expected.
  3. Amazon corp is betting big on next gen heat pumps that are more efficient and cheaper to make.

Things we all can do to preserve a livable world for future generations:

  1. Who wins the fall election can have a big impact on our climate future.  Whatever your priorities, the future requires a livable climate.  Please campaign for any candidate who acknowledges climate science and pledges to take action.  Support them with your donations and vote, as if the future depended on it - because it does.
  2. Talk to friends and family about climate and item #1
  3. Keep working to lower your own family's emissions, especially from heating, cooling and transportation.  When you need a new car, first look at used EVs!
