Today’s Program | Thursday, March 2, 2017

Today: Human Rights Commission (Wakely)

Next Week: Emma Nielsen, Exchange Student from Denmark (Frago)

Birthdays: Larry Fowler (2/28), Janine Atchison and Sharon Flaten (3/4).

Last Week:
This we know: Matteo Lombardo likes soccer. He’s been playing the sport since he was five-years old, and he said playing on the high school’s state tournament team is the highlight of his exchange year in Northfield. His experience between the lines last fall with its emphasis on team was a new and refreshing experience, he said.

Matteo comes from Milan, Italy. He has an older sister who is studying International Relations at the university. She was once an exchange student, living in Washington State for a year. Back home, Matteo attends a high school organized around science. He is a junior in that program.

Milan, of course, is the fashion capital of the world. Twice a year, the city is turned over to “fashion week,” which attracts designers, models and promoters of international brands such as Gucci and Prada. The romantic canals, once used to transport food throughout the city, are now lined with restaurants, markets and bars.

Matteo finds Rome, the cradle of western civilization and home to the Vatican, more interesting. Naples, too, has its attributes, despite a reputation for crime and corruption. It is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world.

To take full advantage of his exchange year, Matteo said he has learned to say “yes” to almost anything. It opens up new possibilities and helps him remain open-minded. He said “yes” to playing with the high school tennis team this spring. His current host father, Scott Nesbitt, St. Olaf College men’s tennis coach, is helping him prepare for the season.

Pat O’Neill sure knows  how to sell himself. He tells us he is not a sports fan, never played baseball, his high school shop teacher labeled him a “wood butcher,” he plays guitar, piano and the Irish drum, none of them well.  So does he have any redeeming qualities?

Yes. In his litany of Pat O’Neill random intangibles, he shared that he started to downhill ski at 3, water-ski at 5. He took up martial arts in college and has found a certain purity of spirit while piloting a sailboat or riding the range on horseback in Montana. Late in life, he discovered a talent for woodworking and turning, which he finds meditative, and has founded the Northfield Turners Guild. Oh, and he as a television that needs a new home.

New Member: Carl Behr was formally inducted into the club. He is a retired airline pilot who is active locally in the Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra and the Vintage Band Festival. His sponsor is David Brown. Welcome Carl.

Guests: Andrea Hoff, Elaine and Scott Nesbit (Matteo), Mark Anderson (Estenson), Val Walker (Stull) and Joan Behr (Brown)

Scholarship Enhancement: David Wolf (A treasurer knows how to follow the money.)

Other Announcements
The Rotary Foundation Centennial dinner raised an impressive $10,555 for the foundation. If you would still like to make a donation, contact our treasurer Dave Wolf.

February 23 was the 112th anniversary of the founding of Rotary. It has grown from a small cadre of business people meeting in Chicago to an international service organization dedicated to building peace and understanding through service.

Jessie Diggins, a world-class skier known to our Rotary club, recently finished second in the freestyle sprint at the Nordic world championship meet in Lahri, Finland.
