Last Week:
Daniel Knutson likes — make that “loves” — the outdoors.

He comes from a camping family. His parents, two older sisters and a younger brother spent many nights sleeping in tents and days hiking and backpacking. That was their recreation and a great foundation for someone who now serves as an executive director in the Northfield area for the Boy Scouts of America.

Dan grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wis. and graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a degree in Economics and a minor in almost everything else. He worked a number of summer camps for the scouts, which helped remind him of how much he enjoyed the outdoors. Upon graduation, he took a position with the scouts in Mitchell, S.D. and lived two blocks from the iconic corn palace. He spent 3 ½ years recruiting, fundraising and training for some 420 youth and 250 adults.

He patiently waited for an opportunity for a position closer to the Twin Cities. When the Rolling Hills position for Rice, Le Sueur and Scott counties opened up, Dan said “yes.”

Dan believes in scouting. Recent academic studies now show what many have always intuitively believed: those who participate in scouting grow up to be responsible, engaged adults.

“Scouting does great stuff,” Dan said. “And now it’s been proven scientifically that kids who were in scouts turn out to be great adults.”

When he is not on the job, Dan enjoys adventures in both travel and baking.

Matthew Rich joined Rotary in 2008. At the time, he was one of our younger members, now he is a seasoned, mid-life member. Not only has he survived his “trial by fire” presidency, but in the meantime, he and his wife, Leah, have had four children. Matt works for Carlson Capital Management when he is not recruiting new members for the club.

Guests: George Davis (Stevens), Wendy Jessen (Alawalla), Patti Jo Stephenson and Bruce Thompson (Morlan).

Scholarship Enhancement: David Halsor

Sponsorships and registrations for the Turkey Trot are well ahead of last year, according to Kurt Larson. Things are shaping up for a very successful event. This is the time for the big push, so please share all of our Facebook and e-mail communications with those in your orbit. We still need someone to help oversee the food donations on Thanksgiving morning. See Kurt if you can help. And now is the time to bring your own food donation to club meetings.

Our team finished third in the Northfield Public Library Trivia Bee two weeks ago. Many thanks to our intrepid, encyclopedic representatives: Jack Hoschouer, Mike Lemming, Janine Atchison and Jake Conway.
