Today’s Program:Tatiana, our exchange student from Spain, (Bollinger)

Happy Birthday: Rotarians everywhere

Next Week: Therese Whitesong Classification (Cashman)

Last Meeting:

The Lone Ranger, Jim Pokorney, has a good idea, as he so often does, whether he’s using his engineering degree from Washington University to design medical devices or acting on his community service impulses. This time it’s Circles of  Service, a self-organized, grass-roots effort to help people make a difference in their community through volunteer service.

He said the idea is to engage people who are not joiners. It is a model that builds on the interests and talents of its members, promising projects not meetings. Jim said circle participants could be drawn from co-workers, friends, neighbors, and family. Each member takes a turn identifying a project, mobilizing the circle and seeing it through to completion.

There are 12 circles of service active in Northfield right now.  Examples of their service include: putting a new roof on the Manger Inn, helping the “Feed My Starving Children” project, moving furniture and working at Thursday’s Table. They are all different in how they choose service projects, manage them and how often they are performed. 5th Bridge is promoting the circles.  A tool kit is available on the 5th Bridge website. 5th Bridge is also setting up an exchange that will match community needs with circle groups. To get started, visit: As Jim says: “Whenever we do service work, we feel better.”
