Next Week: Zach Pruitt, HCI’s Tri-Bridges Program (Kaczmarek)

Last Week:
River Bend Nature Center, just down the road in Faribault, is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

It was the brain-child of Orwin Rustad, a teacher at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, who in the early ‘70s saw the possibilities of using the former Faribault State Hospital and Regional Center site for recreation and environmental education. Rustad’s vision became a Bicentennial project and now the 743 acres tract boasts an interpretive center, 10-miles of multi-use trails, an environmental education program, summer camps and more.

Breanna Wheeler is now the executive director. She wants her nonprofit organization to be a leader in connecting people of all ages with nature. Studies show that adults as well as kids are healthier if they exchange screen time for outdoor time, she said.

She works with six regular staff and four season staff. River Bend contracts with Faribault schools to provide a nature experience three times a year for students K-6th grade. Some Northfield classes take advantage of this resource, too. They also host a number of special events, including Winterfest and the maple syrup fun run. New this January will be the New Year’s Day snowshoe hike.

Breanna invited us to make use of this resource. They can always use volunteers, new members or financial gifts.

Tim Madigan, who teaches a history seminar on the history of the 1960s for the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium, laid this bit of trivia on us last week. Who is the Nobel Prize winner who played piano briefly under the name of Elston Gunnn with Bobby Vee’s band The Shadows? Now we all know that it is our own North Country bard Bob Dylan. Tim began his professional career as a history teacher, worked for 35 years in city management and has now circled back to teaching history again.

Guests: Sandy Campbell from the Anoka Rotary Club (V. Dilley)

Scholarship Enhancement: GOOOOOAAAALLLLL! Mateo wins.

The Turkey Trot is in full swing. We need volunteers to help with the event Thanksgiving morning, we need your help promoting the event through your social media platforms and we need runners and walkers. Members can now bring donations to our meetings to jump-start the food drive aspect of the event. The “free-range” Turkey Trot is getting traction among those who will not be in Northfield the day of the run. Friday, Nov. 11, is the deadline for those joining us long distance. Check out our website for details and see the great video posted by David Stanford.

David Koenig, chair of The Rotary Ethics Workshop project, said feedback from the October 25 event was universally positive from the 29 high school students in attendance. He thanked the Rotarians and Sertomans who volunteered to help make this event possible.

Well-wishes from club members were sent to Hannah Puczko and Ramiz Allawala. Both are recovering from surgery.

Raina Fox, a young woman from Macalester College who was endorsed by our district, received a Peace Fellowship in this latest round. She will be studying peace and conflict resolution this year at Queensland, Australia.
