Three members of this year’s inbound exchange class are with us today. They are: Nicole Blaires-Choler from Paraguay, Hao-Hsuan Hsia from Taiwan and Jose Martinez Maza from Mexico. Please give them a warm Northfield Rotary welcome. Two more students will join us in January.

Last Week:  Alyssa Herzog Melby is the new executive director Northfield Arts Guild (NAG). Her presence is part of an effort to revitalize an organization that has promoted the arts and served the community since 1959.

NAG’s vision for the future is growth, awareness and connection, Alyssa said.

The organization has been restructured to better focus on its core service areas.

Membership is growing. Volunteer participation is on the rise, and new partnerships are being developed with community organizations such as the Y, community education and the senior center.

Alyssa grew up on the Montgomery/Lonsdale area. She was involved in the arts as a child, participating in theater and dance, and playing the tuba. She attended high school at the Perpich Center for Arts Education, received her BA in theater at University of Minnesota Morris and then her MA in Arts Education at the University of Pittsburgh.

She started her career as a “teaching artist” in the schools. She worked for Americorps as a reading coach and also served as Director of Education at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater.

NAG serves 30,000 people annually.  Its community theater produces five shows each year.  It sponsors the Riverfront Arts Festival at Defeat of Jesse James Days.  It supports five gallery sites around town – the main gallery, member gallery, “up” gallery, Allina gallery, Archer House gallery.  The gift shop is consignment based and membership will be required September 1 to sell in the shop.

Music is an important component of NAG’s programming. Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra is a part of the NAG.  NAG also sponsors the 411 Concert Series of folk musicians.

NAG supports birth-adult arts education.  It offers non-competitive, non-performance based dance classes which emphasis personal growth and development.  Alyssa is especially proud of NAG’s specialty classes such as Autism & the Arts.

Sixty percent of NAG’s revenue is earned income, fees or ticket sales. Forty percent comes from donations or grants.

NAG acquired its first property, now the theater at 411 Third Street, in 1961.  The City of Northfield sold them the former YMCA/City Hall building in downtown Northfield for $1 in 1988.

Mark Gleason is Director of Corporate Foundation Relations at Carleton College.  Essentially, he seeks grants to fund college initiatives. One example is providing grants to support  international students.
