Mary McNulty’s idea is simple. Everyone deserves a birthday cake. That includes people who are living in difficult circumstances.

In 1999, she and a friend launched “You Are Special” to provide birthday cakes for kids who were living in a Waukesha, Wis. domestic abuse shelter. Twelve years and 2,000 cakes later, Mary’s program has expanded to provide cakes to people in 26 shelters in five Wisconsin counties.

Her program now serves homeless shelters, domestic abuse shelters, a shelter for homeless teens, one for addiction support, one for prison release, and one for pregnant teens. She has 100 bakers on her roster who volunteer time and materials to making someone’s day. The cakes now are as often “welcome” cakes as “birthday” cakes, but they are always personalized with the individual’s name written on the icing. Many of the recipients have never experienced thist act of kindness and affirmation.

You Are Special has branched out over time. It has baked 15,000 cookies for the troops in Iraq, formed a partnership with “Healing Hearts” for children who are missing a parent and is now raising funds for honor flights for WWII veterans. Mary said her program can easily be replicated and she invites people to do it.

Mary is the sister of club member Colleen VanBlarcom.
