Last Week:

In 2008, the city’s Economic Development office received four requests for parcels of land greater than 40 acres. The city had nothing to offer.

Jody Gunderson, economic development director for the City of Northfield, said the annexation of 530 acres on the northwest edge of town gives the city a broader menu of land to help spur the development that will broaden our tax base and provide more employment opportunities for residents.

Gunderson joined the city staff in August of last year. He is originally from the Grand Forks area and worked for the past eight years in Waukee, Iowa, one of the fastest growing communities in the country.

Jody said his goal is to develop partnerships within the community to help implement the EDA’s work plan. He said our strengths include our workforce, the community’s quality of life and an aggressive stance toward development. Much of the activity he sees now is new startups or companies emerging from the startup phase. He said he will make use of the recession to prepare for the recovery.

Northfield is fortunate that it has a diverse economic base. We have not been pigeonholed into any one business cluster, which makes us attractive to both “white collar” businesses and manufacturers.

Guests: Ross Currier (Covey, Luciano Battaglini (Rossing), Brad Leonard (Reese), Kathleen Doran-Norton (Prowe) and Noraf Bleguin (Williams)

Scholarship Enhancement: Rob Martin

Vicki and Lee Dilley were thanked for the tremendous job they did coordinating the visit of the GSE team from India.

Mark Abbot, speaking for the International Service Committee, invited members to submit project ideas for next year that address health, hunger or humanitarian concerns overseas. The committee works with a $4,000 budget, but that money often is leveraged to help fund much larger projects.

Mark your calendars for the Summer Social on Wednesday, July 22, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Estenson Ranch. Please invite spouses, family members and friends to join us in this annual celebration of both our Inbound and Outbound Rotary Exchange students.
