Today’s Program: Bill DeJohn, Director of the Minitex, Interlibrary Loan Service (Young)

Birthdays: Orv Marks (7/6), Candy Taylor (7/7) and Brian Harmelink (7/8).

Next Week: Summer Social, 5:30 to 8 p.m. , Estenson’s Ponderosa

Last Week:

Two recent graduates of Williams College, Martha Rogers and Jose Pacas, told us about the dictionary distribution project they executed last January in the Cauayan area of the Philippines. If you are looking for the local tie here, Martha is the daughter of club member Fred Rogers

The project was a convergence of Martha’s micro-finance project she had previously worked on and Jose’s independent study time during winter term. A local Massachusetts Rotary Club donated 144 dictionaries and 200 for shipping. They decided to carry them down themselves. They weathered a 36-hour trip that included a 10-hour bus ride. January 16 was designated distribution day and the delivery was accompanied by ceremony, speeches and snacks. Their project forged new partnerships between rotary clubs half a world away and sparked interest in local rotary clubs doing more for local schools.

Martha said she is now forming plans to travel and volunteer in South America, working on women’s issues and sustainable agriculture.

Exit Stage Left — Charlie Cogan mercifully turned over the gavel/microphone to our new president, Laurie Williams. Laurie spoke for all when she said Charlie has been an inspiration with his dedication to club activities and projects like Polio Plus. Thanks for your hard work and for doing it so good naturedly, Charlie

Guests: Jen Hartley (Rogers) and Dan Suppes (Brown).

Scholarship Enhancement: Rick Estenson, I think. With the long Fourth of July weekend, the trail is a bit cold..

Javier said “so long,” but not “goodbye.” He returned home last week, but he thinks our paths will cross again.

Roy Shoberg has succeeded Claire Lillis as our District Governor.

Charlie Skinner bid us fare well as he is off to join Kris in Costa Rica. They will keep a home here and return periodically to check on us.
