The WINGS Oasis at Spring Creek Park: getting closer

grove_blog_tn.jpgIMG_1847.JPGThe WINGS Oasis in Spring Creek park, adjacent to the Amerman Pavilion, is almost ready. I took the photo early last week.

The oasis will have three misting showers, a drinking fountain (provided by the Northfield Area Foundation), and two stone benches.

Northfield Rotary is providing project management and labor and WINGS (Women In Northfield Giving Support) is providing a major grant to purchase materials. The WINGS Oasis was designed by Spencer Jones and construction support is being provided by Doug Grove (Grove Landscaping).

Doug Grove wrote about the construction last week on his blog and he included photos of some of the volunteers who are helping to build it. There will be an inauguration ceremony in June.

Service Above Self Award to Peggy Prowe

Rotarian Anne Bretts posted this to the Northfield.org blog earlier this week.

peggy_prowe.jpgEach year the Northfield Rotary Club honors one person with the “Marston Headley Service Above Self Award.” This year Peggy Prowe took the honor. Pete Stolley and Charlie Cogan are shown here as they made the presentation at Thursday’s weekly meeting.

I met Peggy through her work on the Mill Towns Trail . In fact, we met as she arrived on her bike for a meeting at City Hall. But Peggy has a long, rich history of service to the community. Charlie did a great job of telling her story, so I asked him to send along his speech:

The Service Above Self Award was started by Rotary International about thirty years ago and here in Northfield in 1988. About ten years ago, the local award was renamed “The Marston Headley Service Above Self Award”. Many members of the Northfield Rotary Club have had the pleasure of knowing Marston personally as a long-time member of our club, a past club president and the secretary for many years. He is still remembered for his many contributions to the Northfield community. The award is given each year to a member of the club who has given of her/his time and energy to make this club a success and also for strong involvement in the community. This year, there were several very strong candidates for the award, but after extensive deliberations, the committee has chosen Ms. Peggy Prowe.

Jesse James Bike Tour web site

jjbt_ws_tn.jpgNorthfield Rotary’s Jesse James Bike Tour web site and blog went live back in March.

I’ve been working most closely with 2007 bike tour chair Jack Hoschouer on it.

The rest of the bike tour committee keeps bothering us with their input: Brad Frago, Curtis Tiano, Dave Halsor, Ed Lufkin, John Stull, Kari Sobeck, Keith Covey, Mark Abbott, Neil Lutsky, Peggy Prowe, Rick Esse, and Steve Wilmot.

Ecuadorians visit Northfield

IMG_1528_1000.jpg IMG_1556.JPG
For the past few days, the Northfield Rotary Club has been hosting Group Study Exchange (GSE) Rotarians from the Rotary District 4400 in Ecuador. I took these photos at the Northfield Golf Club last Thursday night. Above left: Anne Bretts and Luigi Villacreses at dinner. Above right: Pat O’Neill and Jim Pokorney torturing the visitors with a magic trick.
