Betsey Buckheit is big on bikes.

A former city council member, Betsey came to us as a member of BikeNorthfield, a group that promotes biking and the development of a more bike-friendly community. Now in its third year, BikeNorthfield is moving beyond celebrating bike culture to the development of an action-oriented policy agenda. Its intent is to build, through policy design, engineering, education and enforcement, the foundation for a more sustainable community.

Betsey says Northfield is perfectly positioned to make this shift. It already has a great “bike culture.” It has both local and regional bike connections, a strong sense of place, strong city policies and a lot of short biking destinations within the community. In her estimation, implementing the group’s action plan will raise Northfield’s profile, strengthen its brand and make it a better place to live.

The agenda includes encouraging the walking of bikes through pedestrian thoroughfares, encouraging multiple uses of designated bike lanes, and designing intersections for bikes and pedestrians as well as cars.

BikeNorthfield is in search of partners, people or businesses that will promote its agenda, advocate for biking and help with special events. May is National Bike Month. BikeNorthfield will be planning another “Bike to Work Day. Betsey invited Rotary to think about how it could be a part of that. BikeNorthfield meets on the fourth Thursday of the month 6:30 p.m. at the Hideaway. For more information, contact Bestey at

Mini Classification:

Erica Zwiefel said Betsey Buckheit, a friend who did time with Erica on the Northfield City Council, has had a profound influence on how she approaches the interplay between  city design and quality of life.  She referenced several books — “The Great Neighborhood Book,” “Walkable Cities,” and “Tactical Urbanism” — that reflect Betsey’s influence.  Erica said she admires Betsey’s commitment to design policy, and her creative approach to creating an environment scaled for people.

New Members:

Tim Gilblom, a consulting engineer, was inducted into the club. His sponsor is Richard Maus. Welcome Tim.

Guests: Jeanine Acheson – Northfield City Housing Director (Norvold)

Scholarship Enhancement:  Tim Gilblom, our newest member.

The Rotary Foundation will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.  Charlie Cogan said one of the centennial initiatives will be increasing annual contributions from $300,000 to $500,000. Rotarians will be invited to make the foundation their “charity of choice” and to make a commitment to that goal. If anyone is interested in knowing more about the foundation, Charlie has the latest annual report.

Dr. Chris Richardson announced he will retire June 30 from Northfield Public Schools, where he has served as superintendent for the past 12 years. He said it has been a blessing to work here with a wonderful staff and a great group of students.

Habitat for Humanity is sponsoring a “Hearts and Minds” color dash 5K fundraiser Saturday, April 9 at the Middle School. Dana Norvold said she is still looking for sponsors for two of the three color dash stations. See her if you are interested.
