Last Week:
One thousand seven hearty souls endured rain, sleet and then snow to run in the Rotary Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. Thanks to all who helped with the event. Rob Bierman, our fearless leader, will provide more details today.

Two Weeks Ago:
Anyone who finds her guiding light in Yogi Berra as Elizabeth Child did — remember his famous advice: “If you come to a fork in the road, take it.” — is destined to live an interesting life.

Besides serving as executive director for Northfield Area United Way, Elizabeth is a yoga instructor, a trainer of yoga instructors, a writer and publisher. Hers was not a traditional career path, but her professional interests always revolved around language and movement.

As a youth, she was involved in gymnastics, music and dance. At Connecticut College, she majored in English, but nurtured her passion for dance, her undeclared major. Following college, she moved to Boston and pursued professional dance for three years. She then moved into the world of communications, working for newspapers and then as a communications person for Piper Jaffrey during the exhilarating boom.

She discovered Northfield in mid-life and moved here to pursue a freelance writing career. She met and married local contractor Dick Hagenson and has now found the small-town, neighbor-to-neighbor home she’d always been seeking.

She loves her work with United Way. She sees it as a trusted resource that vets some 20 recipient agencies and programs in service to community philanthropy. All donations are invested locally. In 2014, $273,000 was distributed to local programs, 87 percent of all funds raised.

Elizabeth reminded us that one of three Northfield residents benefits directly from a United Way agency or program. The organization is actively working on a program to connect donors with the agencies they support through volunteer opportunities. She invited us to participate on allocation panels, if we want to contribute time as well as money.

Mini Classification:

Charlie Kyte likes to work. It started at the age of 12 when his Dad “suggested” he go to work at a local garage. With six years of pumping gas and changing oil under his belt, he went to college and became a teacher, then a principal, then a superintendent and finally executive director for the Minnesota Association of School Administrators.

He retired from that position several years ago and spent two miserable months in full-fledged retirement. He’s now comfortably occupied with consulting work, an investment company, and a company called Peer Solutions that offers products to aid schools in evaluation of principals. And he still has time for travel and grandkids.

Guests: Kathy Thacher (Halverson)

Scholarship Enhancement:  John Sinning, the legend continues

Jack Hoschouer did a makeup two weeks ago, recent winners of the Marston Headley Service Above Self Award — Jean Wakely (2013), Michelle Lasswell and Brad Frago (2014), and Virginia Kaczmarek (2015) — with their plaques.

We have responsibility for Meals-On-Wheels in January. See Lynne Pederson if you can help.

Boxes for recycling cell phone are now available at our meetings. The phones are being collected by the Minnesota Zoo and used to fund its Recycle the Rain Forest project.
