Next Week: Turkey Trot

Last Week:

By the time Pat O’Neill finished interviewing some 60 candidates to join River Valley Eye Professionals in 2012, Nathan Heilman was the obvious choice.

“It was clear he understood what a small town practice is all about,” said Pat, in introducing Nate’s classification talk.

Growing up in Madison, South Dakota, Nate participated in the marching and concerts bands in high school and was a multi-sport athlete, participating in basketball, cross country, golf, and track and field. As a senior, he was ranked among the top five long jumpers in the state. He still enjoys a good pick-up basketball game now and again.

Nate received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Augustana College. During his senior year, he met his wife of 14 years, Jessica, and they are the proud parents of a five-year-old daughter and a baby on the way.

Following his graduation from Augustana, Nate was awarded a scholarship from the United States Navy to attend optometry school at Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Oregon. He went on to serve as department head of optometric services at Chicago’s Naval Health Clinic Great Lakes, one of the Navy’s largest optometry departments.

Prior to joining River Valley Eye Professionals, Nate practiced in Northampton, Massachusetts. While he enjoys all facets of eye care, Nate is particularly interested in the management of eye diseases like dry eye and glaucoma. He also enjoys the fitting of specialty contact lenses.

In his free time, Nate enjoys spending time with his family, the occasional round of golf, and regular workouts at the gym. He loves being in Northfield and he hopes to make it his home for years to come.

Paul Harris Fellowship: Matthew Rich presented a Paul Harris Fellowship to Leah Rich, his spouse and “the MVP” of their household. Congratulations, Leah.

Forty-two juniors and seniors from Northfield High School and Artech participated in the Rotary Ethics Workshop last Thursday. Please thank Jean Wakely and Laurie Williams for their work on hospitality and food; David Koenig, Todd Thompson, Sharon and Ramiz Allawala, Vicky Langer, Lee Dilley and Michelle Lasswell for their work as table facilitators; Judy Brown Wescott for recruiting our table facilitators and to Greg Carlson for his help with printing. Tom Wilson and Bill Lindberg from Eagan Rotary Club presented the workshop content.

Robert Bierman offered his hearty thanks to all those who signed up to volunteer for the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot (you know who you are) and encouraged everyone else to get out on the course for the event. Planners for the event are shooting for a day above -4 degrees.

With Veterans Day celebrated earlier in the week, Rick Estenson asked all the veterans at the meeting to stand up and take a bow. They did and we gave them a warm round of applause.

Boxes for recycling cell phone are now available at our meetings. The phones are being collected by the Minnesota Zoo and used to fund its Recycle the Rain Forest project.
