Last Week:

Michael Maus is looking for a few good men and women — 55 years of age or older — to join Common Good RSVP, the retired senior volunteer program.

It is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency, and coordinated locally by Catholic Charities. Michael is a regional coordinator for Rice, Steele, Dodge and Mower counties.

The program concentrates on four strategic areas: independent living services for seniors, which include transportation, companionship and respite care; educational assistance in elementary schools; access to affordable food, either food delivery or food distribution; and access to affordable housing. RSVP helps with selection of a volunteer opportunity, travel reimbursement and supplemental accident and liability insurance.

Locally, RSVP has established partnerships with local service providers. They work closely with Three Links with a bone builders program, Accelerate Northfield on the academic achievement gap, Rice County Habitat for Humanity and Thursday’s Table.

Michael is aware of Northfield’s tradition of community service and volunteerism, but he would like to get more people involved. For more information, e-mail Michael at: Mmaas@ccwinona.org.

Mini-Classification:

Jim Blaha, now a Rotarian of 15 years, would characterize himself as a “‘busy bee.” He keeps bees, bakes bread and brews beer. He is married to Kay, and they have three boys (Sons really I am trying to keep the “b” theme alive.) They are: Matt (Northfield), Mike (Taos, N.M.) and Tim (Chicago).

Guests: Kathy Jasnoch (Kaczmarek) and Ivy Ainsworth (Blaha)

Scholarship Enhancement: Professor Robert Will
