Our district’s 2012 Global Study Exchange (GSE) to Brazil was born in friendship and forged many new friendships by the time the trip was over.

Vicki Dilley, the exchange leader; Erin Mayberry of Northfield Public Schools Community Services Division; Amy Schreiner, a chiropractor from River Falls, Wis.; Monica Muchow, a city clerk from Le Sueur; and Jill Frey, an financial analyst from Minneapolis; spent four weeks this past spring on a vocational and cultural exchange in Brazil. They were the complement to the GSE team that we hosted in April. Last week, Vicki, Erin, Amy and Monica shared their story with us.

The trip came about because of a relationship Judy Freund, former district governor, and Craig Leiser, current district governor, have with Rotarians in Bahia, Brazil. What unfolded created many strong bonds between team members, their host families and the Rotarians they met along the way.

The team landed in Salvador, Brazil and traveled some 1,800 miles, visiting 12 cities in the state of Bahia, Brazil. They visited farms where cocoa, coffee, oranges and cotton are grown, a turtle refuge, schools, a drug rehab center and several ongoing Rotary projects. They had time for sightseeing, and some stayed on for extended travel after the formal team visit ended.

They often felt like celebrities and enjoyed extravagant Brazilian hospitality. They also confronted a vexing contrast between the country’s wealth and poverty that often co-exists in close proximity. They learned a lot about Brazil, but also came away with a deep appreciation for all they have here at home and how privileged they feel to live and work in the United States.

The next district GSE team will be heading to the Czech Republic next year. The application process will begin this summer. If you are interested, stay tuned.

Guests: Allison Watkins (Young), Bridgette (Conway), Judy Dierks, Beth and Mary Ann (V. Dilley).

Scholarship Winner: Earl Crow

The district’s next Fast for Hope cultural delegation to Nicaragua will be October 13 through 21,. which coincides with MEA week.
