Today: Legislative Session Summary with Senator Al DeKruif and Representative Kelby Woodard (Hoschouer)

Birthdays: Joe Hargis 5/29

Next Week: Lori Sturdevant, Minneapolis Star-Tribune Opinion Columnist  (Kyte)

Last Week:

What a treat to see many pictures of the people directly benefitting from our club’s major international project in Thailand.  Clarice Grabau, Jane Fenton and Robert Bierman traveled to Mu Si Khee  outside Cheng Mai to witness the improvements that Rotary has made to the community development program of the Karen village.  A new cement block making machine and a rice milling machine provide increased self-sufficiency to the local residents.  New bathrooms, computers, desks and tables have been welcome enhancements to the local school.  it is so nice to see the final products of the combined efforts of local Rotary Clubs’ and Rotary International’s collaboration.

Clarice, Jane and Robert also provided club members with pictures and descriptions of their experiences while attending the 2012 Rotary International Convention held in Bangkok.  The welcoming people, the temples, and the vibrant markets were highlights for the Northfield group.   In Cheng Mai they were treated especially well by members of an all women Rotary Club.  Clearly the Land of a Thousand Smiles made quite a favorable impression on them.

Mini-Classification:

Clarice Grabau is a transplanted Cornhusker, having grown up in Lincoln with happy memories of visits to her grandparents’ farm in western Nebraska.  Her father a physician and her mother a teacher with a law school degree reinforced Clarice’s love of travel.  Clarice and her husband James chose to make Northfield their home since it is close to a major airport to facilitate James’ frequent business travel and because it is a great place to raise their children.  Clarice loves animals and trains service dogs.  After her trip to Thailand we suspect that she might like to train elephants as well!

Guests: Paul Huebner (Estenson), Oumar Diallo (Flaten), Mike Leming (Dilley), Dan Brogan (Larson), Sandi Gerdes and Leighton Hambrick (Fenton), exchange students Nichapat and Leo.

Scholarship Enhancement: Judy Brown-Wescott

Announcements:

Congratulations to Dale Ness who recently received the Northfield Booster Club Distinguished Service Award recognizing his contributions to the Northfield High School athletic program and the community.

Congratulations also to Jim Holden whose talk at the Rotary Club of Fairmont, MN earned money for Rotary’s Polio Eradication efforts.

— President Bierman passed around a cute little “End Polio Now” piggy bank that our members gladly stuffed to the top.
