Last Meeting

In our run-up to the 2011 Defeat of Jesse James Bike Tour, we took time to revisit the early days of our club’s largest annual fundraiser.

It all began in 1995 with Brett Reese and Mike Allen at the helm. Brett said they benefited from low expectations and a lot of on-the-job training. Four hundred nineteen riders participated in Year One.

John Stull and Gary Bollinger co-chaired the event in 2005. That year more than 900 riders participated. John said he learned the value of having a co-chair for an event of this scale; Gary remembered how appreciative riders were of the tour’s organization.

Neil Lutsky, the most recent bike tour chair to speak, tipped his hat to the army of volunteers who make the event such a success. His worst nightmare as chair? The night before the tour, he was kept up all night because he couldn’t remember if the committee had arranged for portable toilets. It had. All was well.

Thanks to Mark Thacher and this year’s bike tour committee for their outstanding job organizing the event for 2011.
