Rotary Cogwheel: Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011

Today’s Program: Northfield Enterprise Center, Megan Allen (Davis)

Happy Birthday: Jean Larson (9/1) and Judy Brown-Wescott (9/4)

Next Week:  Bike Tour Chalk Talk

Last Meeting:

“We’re this close,” said Charlie Cogan, Polio Plus promoter, holding his index finger and thumb about an inch apart.

We have “almost” eradicated polio from the globe, and now we need a final push to finish the job. He asked for renewed commitments to make this happen.

Since Rotary adopted Polio Plus as a project in 1985, more than two billion children have received oral polio vaccine. The Western Hemisphere was declared polio-free in 1994. Only Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India are still generating polio cases.

Since 2008, Rotary International has raised $185 million towards its $200 million goal. It is the match for the $355 million donated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. We have until the end of 2012 to meet our goal.

District 5960, by itself, has raised $500,000. Northfield Rotary has contributed through its annual Turkey Trot, the Texas Hold’em parties, club matches, Richard Maus’s book donations and the tie and scarf campaign.

Charlie raised the  “talking drum” as a symbol of the need to continue to tell the story and share it with the larger community.
