Rotary Cogwheel: Thursday, August 25, 2011

Today’s Program: Polio Plus Update, Charlie Cogan

Happy Birthday: Hannah Puczko (8/28)

Next Week:  Northfield Enterprise Center, Megan Allen (Davis)

Last Meeting:

I’m just going to come right out and lay this on the table. Last week, I goofed. I offer my sincerest apologies to Dayna Norvold who, I am certain, gave a wonderful presentation on Habitat for Humanity. Had I been in the room, her remarks would have been reported in this space.

However, I was not present, and the Great Communicator failed to share his plans with President Bierman. No notes. No report.

So as much as I abhor it, I am forced to “pad” this missive with things that matter not to very many, but will qualify as penance for this scribe’s unexcused absence.

Let’s first examine the colloquial meaning of the term “pad.”

Wikipedia curiously does not have an entry on “to pad,” but Webster’s II New College Dictionary, in an entry for slang, suggests that it means “to lengthen with extraneous material.”

Well, I will let you be the judge as to what is at work here, but I just want to say this has been a debacle of the worst kind and my pledge to you is that we will put this behind us and train our sights on quality journalism so that Rotarians’ confidence in the Cogwheel can be restored.

Inbound students have arrived

They are here. Our five inbound students are now in Northfield. Here are the names and countries:

Aishwarya Gokhale  India

Felcia Speychal  Sweden

Mathilde Mortensen  Denmark

Nichapat Tishyadhigama (she does write Tish often though, if you run out of space on a name tag)  Thailand

Camilo Zuluaga Caicedo  Colombia

Please take time to introduce yourself and get to know these young people who are far from home and eager to learn.

Guests: If you were there, you, no doubt, heard the introductions; if you weren’t there, it probably doesn’t matter.

Scholarship Enhancement: Not sure, but David Wolf often seems to be the default pick, so I am going with him.

— The car raffle campaign continues. President Bierman assured us that the tickets sell themselves, if. you can identify your passion within Rotary and articulate it to prospective customers.
