Last Meeting:

Peter Schmelzer was born and raised in Wausau, WI If your hand represented the state of Wisconsin,  Wausau would be just to the side of your middle knuckle.

Peter is the middle child of three boys. He considers important influences to be his poetic father, his metal foundry-owning grandfather, and older brother, Bill.

Peter was accepted into GM’s Automotive Design program in Flint, MI., but opted instead to study at St. John’s University in Collegeville.  Starting down the mechanical engineering track, he soon decided that mathematics would be more his thing with fewer classes in the basement. He went on to earn a Masters of Architecture degree at Iowa State and continued his tour of the Upper Midwest with a “job from Hell” in Omaha.

Migrating back to a more pleasant locale, he settled in St. Cloud.  Some years later he found his way to Northfield to work at SMSQ Architects for five years. He then then started his own firm, Vivus Architecture, with his wife, whom he had met in Collegeville and had predicted they would one day run a business together. Peter has four children, Amelia, Andrew, Noah, and Charlie, and wonders if the hobby his wife encouraged was children or home beer brewing. Peter, once an active scout himself, now volunteers to see that his boys get to experience freezing cold camping trips with the Boy Scouts.
