TODAY’S PROGRAM

Rotary Cogwheel: Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011

Today’s Program: Marion Arpin Presents (O’Neill)

Happy Birthday: Jim Bracher and Alan Marks (2/16), Jane Fenton and John Stull (2/18) and Peggy Prowe (2/19).

Next Week: Old Prairieville Cemetery, Tim & Sue Lloyd (Stevens)

Last Meeting:

Betsy Spethmann certainly talks a good game, but can she write? Well, apparently yes.

She spent 22 years in business journalism, writing for the likes of Brandweek and Advertising Age. She interviewed the titans of the food industry and was once invited to a “build your own burger” party in the Burger King test kitchen.

Chapter Two of her career found her working for companies such as CNN and Southwest Airlines, helping them strengthen their connections with nonprofits. She called herself a “reputation builder.” Her job was to tell stories that built business and goodwill.

She and her husband, Jim Rossow, and family landed in Northfield almost 13 years ago. Now she serves as the executive director of the United Way. She said she wants to be an effective steward of community resources and help make connections within the community. “I believe when we help each other, we all benefit,” she said.

Helping others and telling stories have been the theme of her life. She gets to do both through her work with the United Way.
