TODAY’S PROGRAM

Rotary Cogwheel: Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010

Today’s Program: District Governor Craig Leiser, (Weber)

Happy Birthday: Ed Lufkin (10/15)

Next Week: Mark Henke Classification (S. Richardson)

Last Week:

Jeff Pesta wasn’t always a Northfield school administrator. Early in his professional life, he was a field scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), an arm of the U.S. Department of Commerce dedicated to preserving ocean resources. He worked on several projects in the fishing industry. His research found him plying the icy waters of the Bering Sea on commercial fishing boats. It was an eye-opening experience for a kid from New Prague. He lived and worked with international crews, learned about the hard-scrabble life of these career commercial fishermen and some times had a front-row seat on geo-political posturing in the region.

Jeff still occasionally works with NOAA on short-term projects he can shoehorn into a summer vacation schedule. One of his projects involved finding ways to keep birds from being trapped in the fishing gear.

Jeff calls the ocean floor one of the last frontiers. He, himself, has identified 100 new species in the course of his work. He said there are millions of species in the water that have not yet been discovered.

New Members Inducted: Tim Madigan (Rossing) and Roberto Zayas (Rich). Tim is interim Northfield city administrator. Roberto is a lawyer who went to law school with Mathew.
