Last Meeting:

Nigeria came to us last week in the form of a Global Study Exchange (GSE) team from Calabar, Nigeria. The team included Akabom Enebong, team leader and an owner of an LP gas marketing company; Ikpeme Anthonia, a radiologist; Okpala Valentine Obinna, a production technologist with Shell Petroleum; and Azodo Clement Chinedu, an oral surgeon.

Akabom said Nigeria has been characterized as “The Giant of Africa.” It has 36 states and two major rivers that supply sustenance and electrical power. The country was colonized by the British and became independent in 1960.

It is a diverse country of 151 million people. English is the official language, but multiple languages are spoken in various localities. Their major source of income is oil. Nigeria ranks eighth in world oil production.

For the past 50 years, Akabom said Nigeria’s problem has been to decide how to spend the oil revenues. Now, as supplies are dwindling, the country is turning to agriculture as its next source of income.

Northfield was the eighth and last stop on their month-long tour.

Guests: Nalongue Cogan (Cogan); Sarah and Sisilo (Dilley); Tim O’Connell and Lindsey Brosler (Cashman).

Scholarship Enhancement: Jim Pokorney, who thinks it was a sign that he pick up his attendance.
