Northfield Rotary Cogwheel | 4.15.10

April 14, 2010

Today’s Program: Mama Tesh, St. Margaret’s Academy in Arusha, Tanzania (Carlson)

Happy Birthday: Did we miss anyone this week?

Next Week:  Nigerian Group Study Exchange (Lee Dilley)

Last Meeting:

It turns out that bicycling is not club member Neil Lutsky’s only passion – his collection of over 200 fountain pens is important to him as well.  Neil provided a very informative history of fountain pens during their heyday before ballpoints took over in the 1960’s.

Early Egyptian reeds led to quill pens, level fill pens and finally to reservoir fountain pens.  American patents were filed in 1884 by Lewis Waterman followed in 1889 by George Parker for pens with ink containers that would not leak.

George Parker founded the Parker Pen Company in Janesville, WI in 1888, and as a Rotarian advertised his pens as early as 1919 in the Rotarian magazine.  The Parker pen became an industry leader with models very familiar to those of us older members of the club; the Parker 51, the Duofold and the Vacumatic, now valuable collectibles.  In addition to Parker and Waterman, other manufacturers included Wirt, Sheaffer, and Cross.

Fountain pens have been the mark of personal histories and memories and have literally documented our cultural history.

Guests: Val Walker (Stull), Jim Young (Lynne Young), Amy Merritt, Director of the KEY plus two members from the KEY’s youth board and one from their adult board (Kaczmarek), and our exchange students Roberto and Louisa.

Scholarship Enhancement: Curtis Tiano
