Northfield Rotary Cogwheel | 7.30.09

July 28, 2009

Today’s Program: Charlie & Chris Skinner: Costa Rica from Several Perspectives (Gett)

Birthdays: Mark Mohlke 7/19, Duane Benson 7/21, Lynne Young 7/28

Next Week: Northfield Area Foundation 15th Anniversary with Karna Halverson (Ellingboe)

Last Meeting (two weeks ago):

Jim Schlichting gave an abbreviated classification talk describing himself as a farmer, sailor, and attorney. A graduate of Blooming Prairie high school and St. Olaf College, Jim spent two years in the Navy before attending law school, and currently practices law in both Albert Lea and Northfield.

Jim introduced Mike Carroll, an award winning professional photographer who was one of the first to travel to Romania after the fall of the communist regime in 1989 and through his photographs documented the horrific scenes of the pediatric AIDS epidemic in Romania and the plight of thousands of children housed in orphanages. The AIDS virus was transmitted through blood donations and inoculations and the huge number of orphans was caused by then Romanian leader Nicolae Ceausescu’s forcing increases in population by mandated births and outlawed birth control.

Mike Carroll and his colleagues continue to provide help to Romanian children in need through the Romanian Children’s Relief Organization based in Massachusetts, whose website is www.RCR.org.

Guests: Joan Peterson (Schlichting), Jessie Streitz (Williams), Ed Kuhlman (Boxer), Bill Talen, Julie Talen

Scholarship Enhancement: Richard Maus

New Member Induction: Ingrid Sampo, Vice President of Fund Development for the Northfield Retirement Community, was inducted into the club, sponsored by Emelda Rasmussen.
